Guru - A review

Well, As I have done over the last decade (Since Bombay to be precise) I watched a Mani Ratnam movie in the first weekend. But, Guru was not the mother of all movie watching experiences like say a Nayagan or Iruvar. The movie had strains of Iruvar and Nayagan all along – basically because of a thematic connect with these movies. Now, that is where I have a problem. Mani has templates of scenes which he retrofits to new projects he undertakes. Now, picture this – Hero is working before he takes on his address to glory. Mani uses an item number to cover that part of the hero’s life. Nila adhu vaanathu mele in Nayagan, “Mayya Mayya” in Guru. Hero and heroine get married, “Nee oru kaadhal” comes in Nayagan, “Ay hairathein” in Guru. Hero is in the pits – “Thenpaandi” in Nayagan, “Jaage hain” in Guru. And, images of Iruvar keep coming whenever Guru addresses meetings. The confined spaces scenes of the lead couple remind you of Roja and Inba’s sequences in Ayutha ezhuthu. It raises two possible questions - Has Mani fallen a trap to his old creations that he has to keep going back to his old movies to borrow scenes? Or is it just his style of film making? However much I want to believe the latter argument, as a Maniratnam disciple, I feel let down. Mani has just stopped stretching himself.

The movie has more than its share of moments though.

The kiss Maddy gives Vidya Balan has to be one of the most brilliantly picturised and passionate sequences in Indian movies. The sequence that sets up the rivalry between Mithunda’s camp and Guru is vintage Mani. The 40 minutes after the hero and heroine intro songs are rocking. A lot of Iruvar in it, but excellent pace and depth in the scenes. The party in Guru’s house when his partner decides to part ways is brilliantly done. Amazing characterization. The belly showing sequence and the dialogs that follow it (Guru and Ash rock in this sequence) are again Mani speciale. Rajeev Menon’s transitions in technique as Guru moves on from one stage to another in life are top class. (I just cant help but feel that Barso re was more Rajeev than Mani. Stains of Konjum mainakkale all along. ) The lead pair are good examples of how Mani extracts performances to suit his script. The Vidya Balan – Guru exchanges are delightful. Mithun da is extremely dignified and is a pillar of strength to the movie. Maddy is almost unnecessary, but for that one kiss – Respect!

While on one hand, I gasped in orgasmic pleasure for some of the better moments, I was totally pissed off with the way Mani had to use kids to sing “Jaage hain”. Was he trying a Thevar magan or what? Mani must have been drunk when he conceived this idea. Rahman is just absent in this movie. The overdose of percussion in the re-recording and that irritating “Guru bhai Guru bhai” chants leave you exasperated. ARR can be seen in his elements only in the melodic Barso re charanam inspired BGMs and that amazing bit song for Vidya Balan. But a great bit song is but an essential ingredient in a Mani Movie. “Mayya”, “Barso re” and “Ek lo ek muft” are needless speed breakers to the screenplay. Why does Mani have to make movies that have songs at all? And the climax. Which Mani ratnam hero speaks a 5 min monologue? Maybe I need to watch it in Tamil and get bowled over by the word play. But otherwise, I felt totally let down watching the climax.

Overall, Guru was brilliant in patches, but when Mani Ratnam takes close to 3 years to make a movie, and has such a hardworking cast at his disposal, you expect more.

This movie deserved an entire blog from my part..but doing so will only separate the discussion threads..anyway AMEN to loads of what u said J...

I found strains of Iruvar ALL along..but not quite ur scenes...mine were different...for instance..the way the 2 run up the steps of the hillock...and survey all that's beneath them...found it quite similar to PrakashRaj and Mohanlal atop the building....
and scenes of Aish and Abhishek alone dominating the screen and lying on the bed...shot directly focussing on their upper halves..reminded me of Tabu and Prakashrah in Iruvar..

anyway enough of Iruvar...bottomline..felt a touch of deja vu...but was still bowled over by first half..as sound as any other Mani movie...very crisp...beautifully ended...amazing confrontation in the offing...

And then everything goes pear-shaped...2nd half lacked direction.. too many strands fillping in and out...utter waste of Madhavan..vidya balan I presume was to bring out the humane ways of both protagonists ( all 3 actually...) in conflict...somehow could have defly been etched better..bro-in-law and father completely forgotten later on..or did I miss them somehow?

Rahman a class act in 1st half..liked the BGM a lot..2nd half too much of Guru Bhai..cheap re-recording..and didn't like the portions which had the ppl's chorus in the background a la Mudhalvan...too repetitive I felt...

and Barso Re was every inch Rajiv menon..the way he allows the lighting to drape over Aish is a JOY to behold..sathiyamaa inspires me to pay more attention when I take my dime-a-dozen fotos..

But biggest sore point..Mani's message..ridiculous according to me.. in fact I'm willing to give him the benefit and say Mani wanted to say something better but lost his mind in the way..'cos will not excuse the ending otherwise..

In his Rediff interview, he says that he wanted to show the character taking grey shades and show the pitfalls accompanying this blazing desire to come up in life....i expected that to be negative..not a sugar-coated message which makes him a MARTYR in the end...c'mon u can do better than that Mani..whewre was the need to do a cop-ouyt in the end? Afraid to show raise the hackles of all the corporates that end up rewarding themselves/share-holders and NOBODY else...

ultimately, quite disappointed...and that's after agreeing that the first half was almost as good as any other Mani movie...

totally agree with mosta what you say Karthik. Iruvar and unnodu naan irundha strains were just too obvious to ignore.

yes to both J and Ranga.
Not a top 5 mani movie this.
But am saying its good enuff for Mani to say proudly 'I made this movie'..

Rahman rerecording, Ranga hit the nail ON THE HEAD! though the second half had - according to me - the best song of the film, that vidya balan, maddy song. to me, that is the best background score in the film. very very close to the barso re flute when ash first meets abhi on the train and she's crying.. amaazing flute that.

Yeah, i didnt quite like the references to theesri duniyaa, and desh and all that.
other than that, i loved most of the climax too... the cheeky lines were brilliant.

the kids singing was CRAP!! and the "namaste" didnt quite have the punch.

I watched it on the first day AND again on the second day, and i liked the second half better second time...

Wont pay 130 bucks to watch the film again. And when i do rip the DVD, i wil watch the film in 2 hours or so, i guess.

CD version:

1. donno when interval comes
2. jus b4 he gets paralysed - andha Iruvar comparison - i liked those flash-back scenes - pullin the leg of bro-in-law, etc...that back and forth thing showd a lot of warmth/chemistry that was btwn the lead cpl - nallaa irundhadhu
3. gen aa ve samayaa irundhadhu Guru bhai mannerisms - oru uninhibited - oru open - oru nalla rustic unfinishd product feel...ippadithaan irundhaaraa Dhirubhai?
ps: i think Mithun da mentions about this too when GB takes ashirwad (that silk saree to chinna Vidya Balan scene)
4. lot of scenes where i thot this - 'ippadi thaanaa irundhaaroo avaru! aah...' types...in all, sama awe of the man.
5. climax - managd to understand most of the monologue; enakku pidichirundhadhu - end of it - all those commsion members coming together - konjam comedy.
6. Maddy - ya i too thot wastd - 1 romba pidichcha scene - when GB first visits the marrid VB - andha kuruvi koodu - middle la Madhavan to GB - 'this is not goin to change our ongoing thing.' - samayaa irundhadhu - me too was watching that scene quite suspicious of GB's intentions on the whole...nice un.
7. all of GB's addresses to the junta - 'Shakthi pariyar ko GB ...' - PEDAL MAX...be it the rain meeting or grnd un or the first thats shown...SUPER.

GURUBHAI en thala.

abrupt aa i m stopping...

ps: movie concept-a paththi-yum ezhudhunga paa...audience first, fan next, critic last wud be my 2 pence...

Guru is one movie, I wouldn't spend my precious keystrokes for writing a view or review. The movie is total time waste. I would rather switch to Nat Geo or History channel to see a good documentary. BTW have u guys seen the nat geo investigates series of documentaries and air crash investigations. They are zagzillion times better and moving than Madras talkies movies from maniratnam.

I saw guru after seeing a crap called Pokkiri (both in theatres)...

So I liked it very much.... Bcoz after a long time I'm seeing a gud movie in theatre...

I agree with many of you guys' comments... like the film is not a top 5 mani film... maddy wasted... unnecessary songs... etc...

But the ending was awesome... GB addressing the crowd in the stadium... pedal ending... That too first only he was in focus then slowly Aish and GB's daughters will be visible in the screen... only at that point I realised that he's addressing a crowd... awesome ending scene...

Still wondering why the second half was too dragging....

Any way it is a milestone movie for Abhishek... Mani showcased abishek's potential through yuva and Guru... awesome actor....
